As a Cleveland, OH newborn photographer, one of the most popular question I receive is, “when should I have my newborn photos taken?”. This is such a popular question, and rightfully so. Typically, it’s up to the photographer. I will say however, 7-14 days is best! The truth is that many factors affect when you should schedule your newborn’s first photo shoot. In this article, we’re going to touch them!

Advice From Your Cleveland, OH Newborn Photographer: 3 Things to Keep in Mind Before You Schedule

It’s time to plan your newborn photoshoot! Here are some things to consider when deciding on the best time for your shoot:

-The health of your baby

The health of your baby is one of the most important things to consider. The baby should be at least 5 days old and not more than one month. Newborns are only about 6 pounds at birth, but they grow quickly! By 2 weeks old, your baby may have even doubled in size! This means that he or she will have more room for posing and be a little bit stronger.

-The weather conditions

Check the weather conditions before you decide on an outdoor or indoor photoshoot location. If it’s going to be really hot or cold outside, then it might be better to do your shoot inside. This way you can control how warm your baby feels during the session by wrapping them in blankets or tucking them into jackets as needed! I know, this seems a little bit obvious (and honeslty, you can’t predict the weather), but you can keep the season in mind and go from there!

-The comfort level of everyone involved

You’ll also want to think about the comfort level of everyone involved (including mom and dad). If everyone is tired, cranky, or stressed out by the time it’s time for the shoot, it will show in the photos! So plan ahead so that everyone has plenty of rest during the week leading up to the shoot. It’s also important to keep the kind of delivery you’ll be having in mind. Newborn photoshoots are supposed to be booked prior to the birth of the newborn. Much of the time, you know if you’re having a natural birth or a C-section. If you’re expecting to have a more complicated delivery, you probably don’t want to do a newborn photoshoot 3/4 days after delivery, especially if you’ll be in the photos!

Final Notes!

Choosing a date for your newborn baby’s photoshoot can feel a little complicated. You want to make sure that you get the best possible results from the shoot, but you also want to avoid making it too stressful for yourself and your baby.
