How long do newborn photography sessions take

If you’re expecting a baby, you’ve probably wondered, “How long do newborn photography sessions take?” It’s one of the most common questions I receive from expecting parents, and the answer may surprise you.

Unlike family or milestone sessions, newborn photography isn’t rushed. Every baby is different, and my sessions are designed around your little one’s needs—not the clock.

As a Canton, Ohio newborn photographer, my goal is to create a calm, stress-free experience that results in beautiful portraits you’ll treasure for generations.

Every Baby Sets the Pace

Newborn photography is unlike any other type of session because babies can’t be placed on a schedule. Some babies fall asleep within minutes, while others need a little extra time to settle. Both are completely normal!

That’s why I never rush a newborn session. Your baby leads the way, and we simply follow their cues.

Some babies:

  • Fall asleep almost immediately.
  • Need a feeding before they relax.
  • Prefer to stay wrapped for a while.
  • Want extra snuggles before posing.
  • Need a few breaks throughout the session.

The most important thing is creating a safe, comfortable environment where your baby can relax naturally.

So…How long do newborn photography sessions take?

Most of my newborn sessions last 2 to 3 hours.

That allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing and cuddling
  • Safe posing
  • Parent and sibling portraits (if included)
  • A variety of wrapped and unwrapped setups

Sometimes we’re finished a little sooner, and occasionally a baby needs a bit more time. Either way, I never want parents to feel rushed.

Why Do Newborn Sessions Take Longer Than Other Photos?

The short answer is: safety.

Every pose is done slowly and carefully while paying close attention to your baby’s comfort, circulation, temperature, and airway. If your baby isn’t comfortable with a pose, we simply move on to something they love.

I’d much rather spend extra time creating a calm experience than rush through poses.

What Happens During a Newborn Session?

When you arrive at my Canton studio, everything is already prepared.

The studio is kept warm and cozy to help encourage sleepy babies, and I have everything ready before your session begins so we can focus entirely on your little one.

During your session we may:

  • Start with wrapped poses if your baby is awake.
  • Transition into unwrapped poses once they’re sleeping deeply.
  • Use several different props, beds, buckets, or blankets.
  • Capture parent and sibling portraits.
  • Finish with any special requests you may have.

I always prioritize safe posing practices that follow current recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

How long do newborn photography sessions take if My Baby Won’t Sleep?

Every gallery is unique because every baby is unique.

Parents often worry that their baby won’t cooperate.

Please don’t stress.

After photographing newborns for years, I’ve learned that every baby has their own personality. Some sleep through the entire session, while others prefer to take their time.

I’ve photographed wide-awake babies, babies who wanted to be wrapped first, babies who smiled in their sleep, and babies who decided eating was far more important than pictures.

Beautiful images are still possible.

Patience is one of the most valuable tools a newborn photographer can have.

How Can Parents Prepare?

The good news is that you don’t need to do much.

Before your session, I’ll send preparation information to help everything go as smoothly as possible.

A few simple tips include:

  • Feed your baby shortly before the session when possible.
  • Dress them in loose-fitting clothing to avoid marks on their skin.
  • Bring extra bottles, diapers, and a pacifier if they use one.
  • Relax and enjoy the experience.

Babies can sense when parents are relaxed, so there’s no pressure if things don’t go exactly as planned.

When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Session?

The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester.

We’ll reserve space around your due date, and once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the exact session date.

For the sleepiest, curled-up poses, newborn photography is typically done within the first 7–14 days after birth, although beautiful images can absolutely be created with older newborns as well.
