The Arrival: A Joyous Homecoming

The first moments after arriving home with your newborn are filled with quit a range of emotions. From pure bliss and relief to probably some exhaustion and anxiety. Parents often experience a flood of emotions as they step through the door, finally settling into the comfort of their own space with their little bundle of joy. You may come home to an empty, quiet house, which can be relaxing. You may also come home to the eager grandparents waiting to catch a glimpse. Although the arrival sets the tone for the day ahead, baby’s first day home is really what you make of it.

Nesting and Nurturing: Creating a Cozy Haven

Once settled in, the focus shifts to creating a nurturing environment for both baby and parents. This often involves setting up a cozy feeding station with all the essentials close at hand. Make sure you have burp cloths to bottles and breastfeeding pillows. For many families, baby’s first day home is a time to nestle into the nursery, admiring the tiny details and marveling at the realization that this room will be the backdrop for countless cherished memories to come. If possible, try to have their nursery space set up in advance! This will release something for you back home to do list!

Nurturing Expectations during Baby’s First Day Home

Baby’s first day home will consist of a fairly simple rinse and repeat cycle. They’ll poop, they’ll eat, they’ll sleep, they might play a little, and then the cycle repeats. They’ll spend the majority of their first day home in their nursery area, with the occasional cuddle in the rocking chair or stroll around the front porch. Do your best to sleep when they sleep during these first 24 hours. Newborns do not follow a “sleep for 8 hours during the night” kind of schedule. You’ll have to adjust a bit and share the duties with your partner or ask a friend or family member to pitch in!
